3 Tips to Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

The holidays are over and we are all feeling the repercussions of eating so much stuffing and spending so much on gifts. It is probably for this reason that so many of us feel the need to make our New Year’s resolutions. Most of us choose the same things; lose weight, quit smoking, watch less TV; you know the drill but how many of us will actually stick to our resolutions?

According to a study published by Virgin Mobile, 15% of Canadians admit to breaking their resolutions after one week, 19% can’t even make it past 24hrs. Only 19% of Canadians can make it through a full year while maintaining their resolutions. So how can you be part of the 19%? We have come up with 3 different ways.

  1. The first and easiest way to help you follow through is to keep it simple. It is great to want to be a millionaire but is it attainable? Try small changes like flossing regularly or doing one more sit up each day. Keeping things realistic will save you from becoming discouraged.
  2. Another mistake people make is trying to complete several resolutions at the same time. Of course it would be great to start working out, eating healthy and quit smoking but it’s unrealistic to do all of these at once. Try putting them in order from most likely to complete to least likely, don’t start on the next resolution until you’ve finished the first. The excitement you’ll receive from completing your first goal will motivate you to move onto the next.
  3. The last trick that may help you is for if you have one big resolution. It is simple; reward yourself. For example, if you want to stop eating junk food for a year, add cheat days. Instead of not eating any fast food for the year, allow one day a month to indulge. Knowing that you have something to look forward to will make it easier to keep long resolutions.

If you have trouble or fall off track don’t get discouraged. The most important thing is that you have set goals and are working towards them.
