Readers’ Choice Platinum winner for best agent and best team

Friday, July 9th, 2010 by Dan Cooper

Thank you to everyone who voted to make The Dan Cooper Team of Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd., Brokerage the Platinum winner for Best Real Estate Agent and Best Real Estate Team in North Oakville Today’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards. Of all the awards my team and I have won over the years, the most gratifying are those that are the result of the recognition we receive from people in our own community. The Readers’ Choice Awards are as grassroots as you can get, and being named Number 1 for both agent and team are proof that we are having a significant impact right here in our own community. I believe this recognition has been achieved for two reasons – our business success and community giving.

We are very active in Oakville and Burlington and that has provided us with a very high profile. In fact, earlier this year we were proud to have earned the distinction of being the Number 1 Royal LePage Team for Canada in 2009. This is our seventh top finish in the past 10 years and is a testament to a lot of hard work and a high degree of success for our clients. What it means for our clients is that they are with one of the best real estate firms in the country. Our creative marketing strategies are accomplishing two things – they are selling homes quickly and for top dollar.

So, the recognition by the Readers’ Choice Awards is in a large part due to the hard work we put into selling your home. We have developed innovative and carefully selected methods of showcasing your home for optimum exposure. These methods involve selecting the prime advertising spots in a variety of publications and using the Internet more creatively than any other broker. For example, my DanCooper.com website is bringing properties to life through a video-based platform. I’m proud to be one of the first to tap into this exciting form of marketing to provide you with a competitive edge when selling your home.

In fact, by June we had achieved a significant real estate milestone – we surpassed 100 homes sold this year. Reaching this level of sales so quickly is the primary reason we are the Number 1 Team in Canada for Royal LePage. The Readers’ Choice Awards reinforces the exposure we are gaining for your properties which also puts The Dan Cooper Team of Royal LePage in the spotlight.

Achieving a high community profile, however, requires more than simply being recognized for our business visibility. Being community minded is critical in today’s world. We have an obligation to give back to the community in which we work and live and I’m proud of the sponsorships and support we are able to provide to community causes and organizations – both large and small. These include the Oakville Hospital Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Comic Vision for the Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts just to name a few. Building a strong community requires support from all of us.

Again, thank you to all who voted to recognize the role my team and I have been able to play to help make our community vibrant and healthy.

Celebrities, golf and raising money for a great cause!

I’m proud to be partnered with a great organization such as the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton. Their work has a tremendous impact on children at-risk in our community, providing critical mentorship programs for children and youth of all ages who need our help.

And I’m immensely pleased that the first Dan Cooper Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament held on June 24th at Glen Abbey was a sold out affair and is fully expected to have reached BBBSH’s goal of raising $60,000. I want to thank all those who participated to make this inaugural invitational a huge success, and to the celebrities who made time for this great cause – CFL greats Matt Dunigan and Miles Gorrell, Canadian actor Art Hindle, sports broadcaster and former NHL executive Gord Stellick to name a few.

Jules Graham-Hood, BBBSH Executive Director, had these kind words, “We are very grateful to have Dan and his team looking at a long-term relationship with BBBSH and our ‘Give Where You Live Work and Play’ campaign. Next year has some new surprises in store for our more fair weather golfers who wish to play a little and enjoy a little pampering and delicacies in support of BBBSH.”

It can be a challenge when there are several golf tournaments each day for worthy charities, not to mention donor fatigue. However grassroots charities such as the BBBSH are preventative in focus, helping children in the early stages by providing mentorship that has a positive impact that lasts a lifetime with these kids of all ages. Our young people are our future leaders and it is critical that we provide all the support we can to ensure they develop into good citizens, business people and community leaders. Few of us may be aware that there are hundreds of youth at-risk here in our own community. Often, our comfortable and insular lives shield us from some very hard truths in our back yard. This reality, however, is only too clear to the great people and volunteers at BBBSH.

“Give where you live” is a slogan adopted by many charitable organizations across North America, but it really does sum up my own personal philanthropic objectives and the approach of the Dan Cooper Team when it comes to donations and giving back to the community. I have chosen a number of outstanding organizations in which to make significant contributions. The new Oakville Hospital will be built in the very near future and so I have pledged a percentage of my commissions to the Oakville Hospital Foundation because I believe a strong and vibrant community needs state-of-the-art health care for its citizens.

I was also proud to be the venue sponsor for Comic Vision at Le Dome on North Service Road East in April. This is Canada’s most successful night of stand-up comedy and fundraising in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Other organizations I support include the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Culture and arts are also critical for the well-being of a community and I’m proud that my Dan Cooper Concert Series brings internationally acclaimed performers to our small corner of the globe. To find out who is performing in the coming months visit www.oc4pa.ca.

I encourage all of you to give back to the community in any way you can; whether it is with money or time or both. Your efforts and contributions help make our community stronger and a better place in which to live.

Comic Vision Oakville raises $120,000 for critical vision research

I can’t begin to describe the feeling one gets when you have an opportunity to play a key role in a successful fundraising event. On April 28th, Comic Vision Oakville raised more than $120,000 for the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB), an organization that is helping people with serious eye diseases. Many of us take our sight for granted, but the prospect of losing it can be terrifying for any of us. And so I was immensely proud, along with Royal LePage, to be the venue sponsor for this very worthwhile cause. We selected Le Dome on North Service Road East for this year’s show, and according to Comic Vision Oakville, the new venue contributed to this being the annual event’s most successful year yet.

The show was a sell-out, with 530 attendees coming out for a highly entertaining and enjoyable evening of laughter, and to show their support for FFB. This is Canada’s most successful night of stand-up comedy and fundraising for FFB. The cross-country tour of high profile, stand-up comedy always promises to provide a memorable night of entertainment and this year’s show did not disappoint.

Comic Vision is held each year in five cities across Canada, including London, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. The national tour this year raised more than $680,000. All proceeds will go directly to the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which funds vision research at hospitals and universities across Canada. The FFB has played a pivotal role in bringing researchers closer than ever to potential treatments and cures that can one day reverse genetic forms of blindness. Of course, an event such as this takes an army of people behind the scenes to ensure it is a premier fundraiser for FFB. Comic Vision Oakville says a major thank you goes out to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers and the continued support from the Oakville and Burlington communities.

For our part, the Dan Cooper Team and Royal LePage are proud to provide ongoing support for local organizations, services and programs. It is our commitment to give back to the community in which we work and live. We are not simply in the business of selling properties and helping buyers find homes. We are an integral part of this terrific community. We are your neighbour, our children go to school here and we shop in the same grocery stores. This is our community and the Dan Cooper Team is proud to play a part in shaping its character and its success.

Comic Vision Oakville

Comic Vision 2010

Comic Vision Oakville will be held on April 28th at Le Dome, with a sold-out audience of 530 attendees showing their support for the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB). Comic Vision’s move to a new location was made possible because of the generous support of Dan Cooper and Royal LePage, this year’s venue sponsor. Dan Cooper and Royal LePage have been generous sponsors of Comic Vision Oakville with the Foundation Fighting Blindness since 2006. Headlining the event is funny man, Derek Edwards, who in addition to his successful and well received live performances all over North America, has appeared on “Just For Laughs” and is a winner of the prestigious Vail award at the Colorado Invitational Comedy Competition.

Comic Vision was co-founded by comedian and Oakville resident, Meg Soper, who also performs at the event, and Ann Morrison in 1999, after Ann’s son was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). RP is a degenerative eye disease that causes progressive vision loss with symptoms appearing during childhood.

All money raised by Comic Vision goes to support vision research through the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Comic Vision would like to extend a special thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors and the communities of Oakville and Burlington for making Comic Vision possible year after year.

Due to its great success, Comic Vision is held in a total of five cities across Canada, including Oakville, London, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. To see videos and photos of the event, please visit www.comicvision.ca. For more information about the Foundation Fighting Blindness, please visit www.ffb.ca.

“I am proud that I can make a significant contribution to this very serious health issue,” says Dan Cooper. “There is nothing funny about blindness, but with comedy and the giving spirit of Oakville citizens we can make an impact in the fight against blindness. There is more to a community than homes, roads and shopping districts. The character of a town or city is defined by the number of caring and giving people in our midst. I’m proud that the Dan Cooper Team can be counted among our generous citizens by providing support for worthy organizations such as Comic Vision.”

A young local talent launches her first CD

Friday, February 12th, 2010 by Dan Cooper

Every now and then you come across someone who absolutely wows you with their talent. This was the case recently for the Dan Cooper team and me when we went to the popular Latitude Restaurant at Dorval and North Service Road to see a young violinist named Leslie Ashworth. What Leslie has accomplished with the violin at just the age of 12 is incredible. Leslie not only plays beautifully, but she composes her own music as well. We were simply blown away by this young lady. I play the guitar so I can appreciate how difficult it is to master a string instrument and to be able to perform at a professional level.

My team and I had gone to Latitude because one of our core values is to support the community, good causes and the efforts of Oakville residents. We wanted to come out and show support for Leslie, and we were well rewarded with an outstanding performance. I know that to be number one in anything, it takes a lot of hard work, total commitment and dedication.

What I also love about Leslie’s new CD is that half of the net proceeds are going to a wonderful organization called Free the Children. The organization empowers children in North America to take action to improve the lives of fellow children overseas. Its local leadership initiatives bring leadership and inspiration to tens of thousands of youth in the U.S. and Canada. Free the Children’s international projects, led by its adopt a village program, have brought over 500 schools and water projects to communities around the world.

“I connected with the founders when playing at a gala that they were also attending and it seemed like a great fit, and as they say, the rest was history,” Leslie says. I have to admire this charitable philosophy from someone so young. As for her music, Leslie began playing the violin at age 4, has won many awards and has composed more than 10 original pieces. In fact she recently dedicated a piece to the founder of Future Aces, Herbert Carnegie, at his 90th birthday. On March 7th, Leslie will be playing with the Symphony Hamilton Orchestra at the Royal Botanical Gardens beginning at 3 p.m. The concert is The Magnificent 7 (composed by Elmer Bernstein) and The Junior Young Artists Winners, featuring winners from a competition last spring which included Leslie. She will play the first movement from the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor.

Leslie’s CD is available at music stores and online at www.leslieashworth.com. You can sample some of her music on YouTube as well as her website. Keep your eye on this talented artist, she is going places.
